Long Neck Lady

We've had snow and ice this week and while everyone else was outside sledding I was inside drawing and painting. I DID go outside to watch Josh (grandson) for a few but the fireplace was going, football is on TV and that sounded more my speed. Well, enough for football... lol!  I put on my headphones and watched my friend Laurel stream on Ustream
So this is another page in my journal with the pages that were already painted when the book was made. I am really loving this process because I can just draw and paint and not have to devote excess time to creating the backgrounds for each page. Not only that but just looking at this journal makes me happy! I love it even more each time I touch it :)

I've heard some contrary comments on beaded bindings and them being in the way when you paint or draw but I have not found that to be the case. You can see a few more pics on the post here but I have to warn you that the links to Ustream are no longer valid due to storage and policy issues/changes on UStream.
So enough with the backstory, here's today's painting:
Products used:
Daler Rowney Gesso

I'm a huge proponent of using what you have. It took me years to build up my collections of pencils, crayons and markers. I began buying my necessary colors from open stock (for me it is always flesh tones..lol) and adding when I could. So if for the time being if all you have is your kids colored pencils GO FOR IT!! That's where I started too =0)

A Little Fashion Anyone?

So if you saw my post yesterday you saw the background I had ideas for. If you missed it here it is again:
I know everyone will see something different and that is totally awesome! What I saw right away is the curve of a woman's hip thrust out in a model type pose. Here's what came of it:
Dang! I wish I had a photo of the sketch to share so you can see how all of those bubbles helped me with the placement of her arms and that bubble or bauble (have no idea what it is...lol) in her hand.
Thanks for stopping by! Two posts in two days? That doesn't happen very often anymore ;P

DecoArt Americana Paints
Caran D'Ache Neo II's

Face and Flowers

Hi all!  I pulled out a journal I made a while back and have never really done anything in. Each page is already painted, stenciled, stamped, etc. so all I have to do is add whatever I want to the page to finish it off.

I've been going crazy making faces in this journal. Maybe sometime soon I'll do a flip through. I used DecoArt Americana paints, watercolor pencils and Neo II watersoluable crayons by Caran D'Ache and Staedtler colored pencils.

Here's one of the next pages I am going to start. I definitely see a shape already emerging. What do you see?
If any of you have never tried this all you need to do is drop rubbing alcohol onto wet paint. I paint an undercoat, let dry then apply a nice juicy layer (contrasting color)  and drop the alcohol while it's still wet.

Still Practicing

No where near where I want to be but also no where near where I was a few years ago. So that ol' practice, practice, practice actually works?

Here's a few close ups of some of the yummier bits:

And one final close up of the face:

Still not over my turquoise phase! It is my "go to" happy color for the time being so I make no apologies.
Products used:
Daler Rowney Hardbound Sketchbook
Assorted scrapbooking papers for collage
Decou-page by DecoArts
Americana paints by DecoArts (two that I having the most fun with at the moment in Desert Turquoise and Sea Aqua)
Prismacolor Premiere pencils
Rapidograph pen

I think that is about all. We are getting soooo close for Soul Food to start! I hope to see you there!!

Check out Kat's classes for 2014

Let me guess, you decided that you're not an artist because you can't even draw a stick figure or straight line. Kat McBride, from KatCanPaint.com, knows that she can teach anyone, yup you too, how to draw and paint with her Let's Draw and Paint Gorgeous Girls class. Gorgeous Girls is a year long mixed media art class aimed at beginners and it is restarting January 1st 2014 at the Beta price of $197. Do you think you can't draw or paint? Try her freebie lesson all about drawing and painting Glamorous faces, it just happens to be the first lesson of Gorgeous Girls 2014. Check it out! https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/64464092/Glam%20Faces.pdf Need more info on exactly what the class offers? Clickity click right here: http://katcanpaint.com/gorgeous-girls-virtual-art-studio/

Kat is a wonderful artist that shares so much of her talent and makes herself available to her students through newsletters, facebook, twitter, etc. I've taken many workshops and I have to say Kat is one of my favorite teachers.

A Mucha Mocha Morning

I am greatly inspired by Mucha, even when I was making jewelry. His art deco motifs are magnificent. Lately I've been fascinated by his lines. Thick and thin, outline, suggested... I could gaze arround one of his illustrations for hours.
The title is a play on my daughter's love for her current obssesion, Peppermint Mocha creamer in her coffee. There's many great things about having my daughter and grandson living with us but I think morning coffee is one of the best =0)

I'm going to try to play in Gritty Jane's 40 Portraits challenge as much as I can. If you want to participate or read more you can check that out here

Planets

Hi all! A few weeks ago I posted a video on my YT channel showing me playing with some negative painting. I was first exposed to negative painting in the watercolor painting world. The very first were by Karlyn Holman, Lian Quan Zhen and Linda Kemp and I've been getting more and more obsessed with the process ever since. You can search for all three artists on YT to see excerpts from their workshops on Artistnetwork.tv. I wanted to take that process a step further and add some mixed media spice to it ;)
My good friend (and amazing ARTIST!!) Darcy just posted a piece she did after watching my video. It just warms my heart like you can't believe to see someone take something, run with it and put their own spin on it! Please check out Darcy's post here.

And if you missed the YT here it is:
I hope you have a wonderful, art filled day and don't forget, there's still plenty of time to get in on Soul Food

Mixed Media Fall Leaves Painting

Finally finished my Fall Leaves painting I started last week. It went through so many stages. I would like to try another one in just watercolors and see how that turns out. It was really hard to get a good photo. The light was reflecting off of the varnish, even though it is a matte finish.
But here's a few close up:

What to start next? Isn't that always the question?
Thanks for stopping by =0)

Fall Leaves WIP

I rarely share WIP, mainly because I get so lost in the creating I forget to take pics. Today I remembered!  Some of my friends were talking this morning (and yesterday) about how much we love fall. The colors just wow me like nothing else. And given my recent love of negative painting I started working on this:
I cannot tell you how much I LOVE mixed media! I am finally getting to the point where I can just stop over thinking it and just have fun.
Here's a close up:
Back to the drawing board but as always, thanks for dropping by =0)

Hydrangea and Finch Mixed Media Painting

What's this? TWO posts in one day? That hasn't happened since my DT days! BUT it has felt so good to be in my art room yesterday afternoon and this morning!
I'm sure you've all heard me sing the praises of Paint My Photo before but I will say it again... I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this site! I am so grateful to the amazing photographers that have the skill and equipment to provide me with enough inspiration to keep me painting for the rest of my life. PMP (Paint my Photo) is a ning so you have to join. But I promise you, they do not spam and have one of the BEST, no... THE best newsletters for artists / photographers around.
I was inspired by this amazing photo. Thank you Cynthia!!!
And here is the piece I created:

I cannot tell you how excited I was to watch this piece evolve. I had not intended to do a nature scene. Last night I made the background with DecoArt Americana acrylics, Neo II's and some home made ink sprays created from FW Acrylic Inks. When I began I had every intention of doing a face but after looking at it and channeling (joke of course) Mystele and her Gut Art ways I was seeing mounds of Hydrangea and soft greenery.
Here's a look:
At this point I had sketched in the bird and main hydrangea.  I also had added some masking fluid which really proved unnecessary but oh well.
The rest was done with Winsor and Newton watercolors and a few fine details added with Prismacolor Pencils.  Here's a close up:
You ever have a moment after a piece is done when you just want to jump up and down and pump your fists in the air? Me either... lol! But this one comes darn close! All of my favorite subject matters and products alive on one piece.
Thanks for looking and please head over to Mystele's to find out more about Soul Food as well as her Gut Art classes.

Puppy Love

Here's a piece I've been working on off and on for the last week or so:
Can't you just smell that puppy head smell?
I used DecoArt Americana paints Bahama Blue for the base of the background. I also love their flesh tones. One of these days I may get down the knack of mixing my own flesh tones (yea, right!!)
Here's a few close ups:

Thanks for dropping by! Hope to see you in Soul Food
